Final Fantasy 14’s North American Data Centers Hit by Power Transformer Failure.

Power Outage Causes Major Server Disruption for Final Fantasy 14 North America

On January 5, Final Fantasy 14 experienced a significant server outage, leaving all four North American Data Centers offline shortly after 8:00 PM Eastern. According to reports from players on social media, the server disruption was likely caused by a power outage in the Sacramento area, where the data centers are located. Witnesses in the area reported hearing a loud popping sound consistent with a transformer failure, which caused the outage. Fortunately, servers were restored within an hour.

A History of Server Challenges

While this particular incident was due to a localized power failure, Final Fantasy 14 has faced its share of server troubles in the past. Throughout 2024, the game was frequently targeted by distributed denial-of-service (DDoS) attacks. These attacks, which overwhelm servers with false data packets, caused severe latency issues, rendering the game unplayable for many players.

Although Square Enix has implemented mitigation measures to counteract DDoS attacks, there is no foolproof way to prevent them entirely. Players affected by these attacks have been encouraged to use virtual private networks (VPNs) as a workaround to improve their connection stability.

What Happened During the Recent Outage?

According to posts on the r/ffxiv subreddit, several players shared their in-game activities before the servers went offline. Reddit user Sarikitty noted hearing an explosive sound in Sacramento at the time of the outage, which others corroborated as the sound of a power transformer blowing.

Square Enix quickly released a statement on The Lodestone confirming the server issues and announcing that the situation was under investigation. By the time of writing, servers for the Aether, Crystal, and Primal Data Centers were back online, while the Dynamis Data Center—the newest addition to the North American server network—remained inaccessible.

Localized vs. Global Impact

Unlike previous incidents, this outage was localized to the North American Data Centers, sparing players on Europe, Japan, and Oceanic servers from disruption. The localized nature of the outage further supports the theory that it was caused by the Sacramento power failure.

Looking Ahead to 2025

Despite these challenges, Final Fantasy 14 has ambitious plans for 2025, including the highly anticipated launch of Final Fantasy 14 Mobile. However, ongoing server reliability issues remain a concern. Whether caused by cyberattacks or physical infrastructure problems, such disruptions could impact player confidence in the game’s stability.

For now, players and fans hope that Square Enix can strengthen its server infrastructure to better handle unforeseen incidents, ensuring a smoother experience in the future.
